ASIC and ASSP

ASIC and ASSP are two well-known implementation of system LSI.

ASIC stands for Application Specific IC.
It is in each specially designed for a single customer.
For example, “For MPEG4 ver.3 in supplier A’s Handy phone.” It would be unavailable for supplier B or C, even for other version of A’s device.
The engineer will discuss with his customer in detail.
This is the mainstream of LSI manufactured in Japan.

ASSP stands for Application Specific Standard Process.
In this process, some features, which is to be commonly used as MPEG4 etc., are commonly designed among products.
This is the mainstream of worldwide LSI production.
